Information for parents and guardians using WriteSmart with their children.

What is WriteSmart?

WriteSmart is a writing practice and assessment platform for primary-school students. It helps students practise writing and understand how they can improve, with tasks that support Selective school preparation, Scholarship preparation, and general writing development.

Your child can complete writing tasks across different genres - persuasive, narrative, speech, newspaper report and article writing - and receive an assessment and feedback immediately after submitting their work.

How does assessment work?

Every piece of writing is assessed against the same structured 25-point framework, across six areas:

  • Content & Ideas
  • Structure & Organisation
  • Purpose & Audience
  • Vocabulary & Style
  • Grammar & Sentence Control
  • Spelling & Punctuation

Your child's selected year level is used to calibrate assessment expectations appropriately for their age - for example, what "strong" writing looks like in Year 3 compared with Year 6. It does not affect which writing tasks or difficulty levels are available to your child; every student can access the same task library, at any difficulty.

WriteSmart provides practice assessment and feedback. It is not an official school or examination assessment.

How is AI used?

WriteSmart uses AI-assisted analysis to provide immediate writing assessment and feedback. Like any automated system, it may occasionally make mistakes, so results should be treated as guidance for learning and practice rather than as an official result.

The AI analyses your child's writing against the framework above and generates:

  • A score for each of the six criteria
  • Notes on what the writing does well and what to improve
  • A suggested next practice focus

What information do we collect?

To provide the service, we collect:

  • Account information (such as an email address and display name)
  • Student year level
  • Writing submissions
  • Assessment results
  • Feedback generated from each submission
  • Practice history (which tasks have been attempted, and when)

We aim to collect only information that is reasonably necessary to provide and improve the service.
